According to her LinkedIn-profile (screenshot above is dated June 5th, 2009) Hillary is still running for the office. It’s a pity (and embarrasing) to see that her campaigning-team is using ‘the Internets’ heavily during campaignig. But when that is over, they fall back to their normal, unplugged, dis-connected state. The more obvious it is to see that Obama’s team is still engaged online… No modernistic small talk here.

Am I a Next Speaker?

Yesterday I had a very good conversation with Tessa Sterkenburg of The Next Speaker. Getting to Amsterdam (where we were agreed to meet) was no problem. Moving around in Amsterdam proofed to be a nightmare: loads and loads of tourists wandering around; seeing nothing but ‘nice canal-houses!’… Anyhow: I managed to get there in time. Had a very pleasant and involving conversation with Tessa and shared the WiFi-password of P-King with her. I think we are ‘getting in business’, so The Next Speaker will manage all my speaking and moderating gigs in the future!

This week I will be blogging for the Dutch daily De Volkskrant. They asked me because of the launch of iens recepten off which I am co-founder. In a way this is curious: they ask people who are ‘ in the news’ to blog a week. This blog will be input for an item in their Saturday-edition (print). So: they are asking people who are rather busy because of the things that are happening to blog on a daily basis. Not the best time for such an effort But nice to do nonetheless!

Hans Hillen in PitchTalk

Coming Tuesday (January 8th) Ronnie Overgoor and me will have Hans Hillen in PitchTalk (our weekly TV-talk on Het Gesprek). Hans is chairman of the Dutch Center for Brand and Communication and member of the Senate (Dutch Parliament). We will (try to) discuss the current status on restrictions on commercial communications that were brought up in 2007 and without a doubt will also show up in 2008. Advertising targeted at children should be banned. Commercials for loans, gambling games and paid phone lines (read: sex) should be banned… And so on. Whatever happened to Freedom of Commercial Speech? We will discuss this with Hans Hillen. I hope you will watch and please deliver input before coming Tuesday!

Het Gesprek is starting

The new Dutch television (and online) broadcaster ‘Het Gesprek‘ (‘The Conversation’) is starting today! Last week we did our first gig that went very well. Tomorrow we are going live at 20.00 hour! Exiting. The format of the sender is to bring out 24×7 talk-television. And because of the length of the programs more in-depth interviews should be possible. The people behind Het Gesprek (HG) all earned their laureates in the genre: Ruud Hendriks, Frits Barend and Derk Sauer.
Ronnie Overgoor transferred his PitchTalk.TV to Het Gesprek. He asked me to join him weekly for the ‘news of the week before’. Then the conversations with two guests start. The first shoot was really fun to do: three slightly nervous presenters (yes! stage freight…) a nice crew, Ruud Hendriks stopping by and encouraging everybody, and two very interesting talks (Boris Veldhuijzen van Zanten and Arjan Snijders). More to come!

Students put their papers up for bidding

For years the relation between the academic world and the ‘real’ business world is a cumbersome one. Business often do not know what knowledge is available within the academic community. And students are seldom truly attached with the problems companies face. Even the reputed business schools often have relationships with few companies. These mainly include the bigger internationals that also hire the alumni of these schools.
But now there is a very smart initiative that might change things: a website on which students put their papers up for bidding by companies. They often studied hard on subjects that are of interest for companies. The companies now also gain insight in what is out there for offering. The highest bidder gets the paper. The initiative Kennisveiling (Knowledge Auction) will be launched during to upcoming Picnic-event in Amsterdam (starting September 25th). I’ll keep you posted on the development. Their website is not live yet.

Dutch donor-hoax proves controversial

The initiative of Dutch broadcaster BNN caused some stir. Not only within The Netherland, but also abroad: here (BBC), here (ABC) and here (France24) amongst others. Just do a Google-search on “Dutch Donor Show” and be astonished by the results (894.000)… In short: BNN said to air a show in which a very ill patient (kidney failure) would compete for a donor kidney. Afterwards the transplant would be arranged.

While everybody was condemning the show (ethical mainly) I was never under the impression that this was for real. I could not imagine that this kind of television actually was goiing to happen. I thought of the whole initiative as a rather creative way to raise awareness for the ongoing problem we have in The Netherlands when it comes to a shortage of organ donors. Despite numerous campaigns done by the government and several ‘good causes’ during the years to alter this situation. None were successful. But now we had the whole country (and the world) talking about this topic. While the real issue was covered by the ethical discussion, I am sure that the common public is now more aware of the situation that ever before. In this respect the hoax can be regarded as a huge success. People actually were forced to really *think* about their point of view on being a donor or not. It is rather impossible now – after this hoax – to NOT have an opinion. Saying “I do not (yet) know” on the question “Are you going to be a donor?” puts you in a rather peculiar standpoint: either you are a convinced donor now. Or a convinced non-donor. The time spent in the Dutch government speaking about the moral ins-and-outs of this initiative, could – in my opinion – better be spent on discussion about solving the problem. As BNN puts it: “The problem is real, the waiting lists are real and the three candidates waiting for a kidney are real. The show was a fake. We deliberately caused a stir to raise awereness for this big problem”. Mission accomplished as far as I concern. Pity the ones that still talk about the means and not about the goal.

Widgets advertisionalized?

Widgets are being turned into advertising delivery systems. Their nature – rich media applicatons that are easy to build, customize and add to a site – also make them an attractive way to add advertising to small sites. Google is now testing gadget ads, and weâ€™ve written about services like boobox and AuctionAds (a sponsor) that easily ad affiliate advertising to a site via widgets. Last week eBay also launched â€œto goâ€ widgets that let publishers embed ebay listings into websites, although for now there are no affiliate payments tied to those widgets.
