There is a lot of buzz around Dell nowadays. With Mr Dell Himself back in the saddle and speculations about Dell leaving their trusted ‘Direct Sales’-concept (they might sell their PC’s via bricks-and-mortar-outlets!), one of their initiatives is not in the floodlight. That’s a pity because Dell’s IdeaStorm initiative deserves more attention in my opinion. Via a special website Dell invites customers and prospects to vote on future product development. Via Dell IdeaStorm new Dell PC’s will be available with the open source OS Ubuntu. At the moment of writing people already contributed 4.510 ideas for Dell to consider. Older people seem to use the Internet is same amounts (of time) as youngsters do. This can be concluded from a study by the Dutch SCP (Sociaal Centraal Planbureau). In fact, the elderly are among the fastest growing online users: last year their time online rose from 2,1 hours a week to 3,1 hours a week. While there is not a big difference in their time online, there are differences in the way they use the Internet. Youngsters tend to chat (MSN) more and download music. The elderly use email a lot more. This study was done with the cooperation of two big organisations that focus on elder people: Seniorweb.nl and Vijftigplusser.nl The results of the study will be published coming september 2007 as a whole.

Their beta-program is coming to an end (although downloading the Joost-software (beta) is still by invitation only… Joost is converging the worlds of traditional television and Internet rapidly. I do need to get some handson experience yet. But the player looks good. If you also want to get invited, please leave a comment on this article with your first and last name and email-address. I’ll see what I can do. Or just check the download page on their website (click the banner on top), because they will end their ‘invitation only beta program’ one of these days. I thank Boris Veldhuijzen van Zanten kindly for his invitation. Kudos!
