Dutch telecom-watchdog OPTA has fined a Dutch spammer for € 75.000,-. This was acknowleged by a OPTA-spokesperson, last fridaymorning after reports in Dutch daily AD. The spammer sent at least 9.000.000.000 spam-mails and earned at least 52.000 dollars.
OPTA traced the man after a tip from Microsoft. No details are given, apart that the man lives in the province of Noord-Holland. He hired computers in the USA to be able to sent the spam-messages. Mostly about – oh surprise – advertising for erection-pills and porn-sites.
This is the highest fine up until now given by OPTA. One of the grimmer things OPTA considered by defining the fine, was the fact that the spammer used innocent people’s computers as mail-hubs. Since May 14th, 2004 sending onsolicited e-mailmessages to private persons is prohibited.
